Spring sports are starting this week, student athletes and coaches are buzzing with excitement about the upcoming season. Here are some interviews to see what Garnet Valley athletes are thinking about their spring sport:
Name: Mckenna Steenson
Sport: Track and Field
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: This is my first time doing Track and Field, I have never done it at another school or club before.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I’m looking forward to trying pole vaulting, as my sister does it, and my dad is the coach.
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: I want to try and bend the pole/clear 8ft.
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: I’ve heard a lot of hard things about the first week, but the thing I’ve heard the most often is the weather, and getting back into routine.
Name: Molly Wineburg
Sport: Lacrosse
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: No, actually this is not my first time doing lacrosse and I’ve done it since Rec league in first grade to joining club in 4/5th grade.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: Something I’m most looking forward to in the spring season is playing in the warm sunny weather.
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: One goal I have going into the new season is to make more friends with the upperclassmen and to maybe make it into a varsity game (swing?)
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: The hardest part about the first week of practices is the conditioning and sprinting, which we have to do all through tryouts and is really hard.
Name: Quinn Derohannessian
Sport: Softball
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: I have played softball for many years before this one.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I look forward to becoming friends with the students in the grades above me.
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: One goal I have is to become more confident during this season.
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: The greatest challenge I have faced so far is not being able to use the grass and dirt fields we will actually play on during the season.

Sport: Lacrosse
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: I have been doing my sport years prior.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: Playing with the people on my team.
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: Enjoy the time I have playing.
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: Getting comfortable with everyone.
Name: Maeve Moran
Sport: Track and Field
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: This is not the first time I’ve done track. I've actually done it for 3 seasons now!
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I’m most looking forward to long runs because it’s so fun to hang out with all the girls and run!
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: One goal I have going into this new season is to PR my 800m by 10 seconds!
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: The hardest part about the first week of practices is being mentally prepared! It’s definitely tough physically, but having that mental barrier can definitely be challenging when dealing with those early practices because it’s just something you’re not used to, but leaning on friends and powering through that first week helps, you get used to it and it doesn’t get easier but you get stronger and more resilient!

Sport: Track and Field: Pole Vault
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: I started it in the middle of the spring season last year.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: beating the girls pole vaulting record!
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: Clear enough feet to go to districts and place top 3 at a CAL meet.
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: After not exercising for a while it definitely takes some time to get used to the sport again, and what it puts your body through.
Name: Kaitlyn King
Sport: Track and Field
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: I did track in middle school but I did sprints and then toward the end of 8th grade I did distance.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I am mostly looking forward to having fun after practice with my teammates and friends. I am also looking forward to trying new races and seeing how I can improve my time.
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: One goal that I have this season is to try and get my mile time to be around 5:45. I also want to try and do the 2 mile more and improve my time.
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A:The hardest part is probably just the thought of not being able to go home after school and trying to figure out when to do my homework and make time for everything.
Name: Kaylee Lam
Sport: Track and Field
Q: Is this your first time doing this sport or have you done it in years prior?
A: I have been doing track for three years!
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I’m looking forward to making new friends and getting better!
Q: What is one goal that you have going into the new season?
A: One goal I have is to pr in my events!
Q: What is the hardest part about the first week of practices?
A: I would definitely say the time trials just because everyone is nervous and worried about doing their best!
