Success in wrestling doesn’t come easy; it takes discipline, sacrifice, and a strong mindset. Rising Garnet Valley athlete Neve O’Byrne is proving she has what it takes to go all the way. With athletes from across the country coming together for major competitions like the World Team Trials, the pressure is intense. In this interview, Neve shares her training habits, challenges, and the motivation that keeps her pushing toward her ultimate goal.
What was your initial reaction to qualifying for the World Team Trials?
You don't need to qualify for the World Team Trials. Anyone from the US is allowed to enter the tournament and compete. But, only the best girls compete at this tournament to hopefully get first, leading them to be the US wrestlers at the World Teams. Wrestlers fly out from all over the country, including wrestling from Alaska and Hawaii, to meet up in Spokane, Washington
What has been the biggest key to your success in wrestling so far?
I like to train hard and with people who are bigger or better than I currently am. That way, when I compete against girls in tournaments, I am ready for them.
How do you prepare mentally and physically for high-level competitions?
Physically, I train hard every day all year long, and then as we get closer to competition, I focus on small details to be as ready as possible. Mentally, it can be a struggle sometimes, but knowing that I train really hard helps me, and I use mantras to help me when I have doubts.
What advice would you give to other wrestlers who want to reach your level?
I would say that they need to understand the difference between knowing what you want to do and what you have to do. There is a lot of sacrifice involved in being a high-level wrestler, but if they dedicate themselves to the sport and do all the little things to get better, they will reach their goals.
What has been your toughest match or biggest challenge so far?
I have had lots of tough matches, and I don't think I could just pick one. Each match takes a lot of effort and energy to do my best. Some of the biggest issues I've dealt with are staying focused and not being distracted by others around me. The other issue that I sometimes struggle with is self-doubt. I can be hard on myself, which can be a good and a bad thing at times.
Who has had the biggest impact on your wrestling journey?
I've had a ton of people help me so far through my wrestling journey. My parents have done a ton for me. They've traveled all over the country to get me to practices and tournaments. They support me at home with my diet, schedule practices and tournaments, give me positive praise, and push me when I need it. Also, my coaches and teammates have been great!
How do you stay motivated during long training periods?
I like to focus on my goals and all the little details that will help me reach them. I try to make it as fun as I can, and my coaches help me to stay grounded.
What are your goals for this tournament and beyond?
My ultimate goals are to win the world and Olympic championships. I would love to represent Team USA on a national level.
From intense training to overcoming self-doubt, Neve O’Byrne shows that success is about more than just talent; it’s about commitment and mindset. With strong support from her family, coaches, and teammates, and a clear vision for her future, she continues to work toward becoming a world and Olympic champion. This is only the beginning of her journey.
