Archery Range Field Trip

Dr. Hillemeyer’s AP Physics class, including myself, visited Middletown Archery, where we learned about the applications of projectile motion in archery while also bonding as a class.

On Monday, September 28th, my classmates and I from Dr. Hillemeyer’s AP Physics class made our way to the Middletown Archery Range to explore physics concepts through hands-on application. We got on the bus at 9:45 AM and drove down to the range, where we were greeted by Coach Cindy Gilbert-Bevilacqua. Coach Cindy was the assistant coach for the 2004 Athens Olympics Team and the head coach of the 2012 London Olympics Team USA for archery.

“It was a dream come true, the USA was very successful and I was honored to work with such talented archers,” says Coach Cindy. Nowadays, she runs the Middletown Archery Club where she trains younger kids in the Junior Olympics program, continuing her family business founded 50 years ago.

During the trip, we implemented our knowledge in physics by learning about how projectile motion and energy are used in archery, and we did a lab on it by taking videos of some of the archers in our class.

“I had a wonderful time, it was an incredible bonding experience, and it helped me translate classroom learning experiences to reality,” Cole Williams, one of our top archers claims.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable morning, and we learned how to apply our physics skills in the real world while having fun and bonding while doing so.
